Barrington Lions give the gift of sight

October is Sight Awareness Month, and as a Barrington Lions Club member I’d like to spread the word about “Sharing Our Vision,” the Lions organization’s global service campaign.

Sunday, October 9th is Lions World Sight Day around the world. New vision clinics have been established in several Third World countries and screenings for eye related problems continue to be promoted.

Locally, here in Barrington we have installed beautiful new eyeglass collection boxes in all District 220 schools and at the Garlands. Our many other sites continue to be receptacles for your old and used eye wear. Through cooperation with the school nurses who screen children for eye problems we regularly have 30 to 50 requests for aid in securing glasses.

The Barrington Eye Care Center handles these requests sent to our Lions club. Other individuals who are in desperate need and have no other forms of insurance also seek help from our local club, and we try to help them as well.

Most communities and towns have local Lions clubs where people can find help. I encourage everyone to have their eyes checked regularly and especially during the October Sight Awareness campaign. The motto of Lions is, “We Serve.”
