Charges soon in Waukegan hotel murder
Waukegan police are still trying to piece together the circumstances behind an altercation behind a hotel early Sunday morning that left one person dead.
Lt. Ed Fitzgerald said an altercation "of some kind" happened between two groups of people just after midnight at the Ramada Inn Hotel, 200 N. Green Bay Road.
Fitzgerald said during the altercation a gun was drawn and fired, with the bullet hitting 21-year-old Farkhan Jones in the head.
Jones was able to get back to a car after being shot, climb behind the wheel, then gun the engine, Fitzgerald said. However, the car swerved out of control and slammed into a first-floor room of the hotel, going through the building up to the windshield and shocking a couple inside.
"They were not injured, but definitely shocked," he said. "Police were called to the scene and the entire group of people were apprehended."
Jones was taken from the scene to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead, said Lake County Coroner Richard Keller.
Fitzgerald said details of the incident are still under investigation, but added charges could be filed against everyone involved by Wednesday morning.
Fitzgerald would not release names of the people involved until after charges are filed.
