Use coal and water to solve oil crisis
We can make substantial amounts of gasoline and other alkenes for industrial use from the very abundant reserves of coal and water especially in the western United States.
The allies in World War thought that they had stopped the German war machine when they cut off oil from the mid-east to Germany. However, the Germans were able to continue their war efforts by synthetically producing gasoline and other hydrocarbons using their reserves of coal and water. The process is very simple, but does require a lot water which is not in abundant supply in the western U.S., but the coal can be shipped to places where water is plentiful.
We do not need a pipeline from Canada to the Gulf, nor the importation of oil from the Mideast. With the price of oil over $100 per barrel it is very realistic and cost effective to produce gasoline and other petroleum products from coal and water.
