Lake County officials to investigate Waukegan police shooting
Lake County authorities are investigating a shooting involving a police officer who fired his weapon at a wanted suspect, police said.
Waukegan Police Cmdr. Gabe Guzman said police were called to the 0 to 100 block of Noll Street about 5:30 p.m. Monday to assist in serving an arrest warrant through the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group.
Earlier in the day, Guzman said, MEG searched an apartment that was linked to Darcoven London, 24, of Waukegan, and found large quantities of narcotics and weapons.
Guzman said London was not present at the home when search warrant was executed by MEG, but had returned to the dwelling later in the evening.
London was in a dark-colored sedan when officers arrived at the Noll Street address. Officers attempted to surround the vehicle, but London put the vehicle in gear and attempted to drive away, Guzman said.
As the vehicle was put in gear, an unidentified officer reached for the door and was injured when the door struck his hand, Guzman said.
London then attempted to drive through a second officer who was attempting to block the escaping vehicle, Guzman said. That officer was uninjured but he was forced to dive to safety.
A third officer fired at the vehicle in an attempt to get it to stop, Guzman said. The bullet hit the vehicle, but London escaped capture.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force was brought in to investigate, Guzman said, and the vehicle was last seen heading east on Noll.
Anyone with information about London or the incident are asked to contact Waukegan police at (847) 360-9000.
