Pesticide spills when truck on Route 53 tips

The ramp from westbound Lake-Cook Road to southbound Route 53 is closed, after a truck carrying 36,000 pounds of pesticides overturned Sunday morning.

“It is a hazardous material scene until they determine that nothing has been ruptured or leaked,” said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Bob Huber.

He suggested anyone in the area, near where Palatine, Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove meet, wishing to enter Route 53 southbound get on at either Route 12 or Dundee Road.

Huber said that at 10:47 a.m., the semi rolled over in the left ditch along the ramp. He said the driver refused medical treatment at the scene.

He said the ramp is partially closed because of the emergency equipment in the area, as workers attempt to right the truck.

It cannot be confirmed at this time whether the driver has been ticketed. The accident is under investigation.

“I’m sure he was going too fast to negotiate the curve, and either a load shifted or he just went off the edge of the road and it rolled over,” Huber said.
