'Barbie' goes to church: Geneva minister to preach on summer blockbuster Sept. 3
"Barbie" the movie will be explored Sunday, Sept. 3, at United Methodist Church of Geneva.
The Rev. Becky Nicol, a retired Methodist minister, will preach on "A Look at the Theology in Summer's Blockbuster" at 9 a.m. worship at the church, 211 Hamilton St.
The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.
Rev. Nicol said, "The stories, ideas, and phrases from the Bible pervade our conversations, books, music, and films - including the Barbie movie. Director Greta Gerwig has said that the Barbie movie retells the creation story from Genesis and that her Catholic schooling was an influence."
According to Rev. Nicol, the movie raises many questions about feminism and patriarchy, relationships between men and women, how the real world compares to our ideals and finding our purpose in life.
"On Sept. 3, my sermon will delve into the story of creation and how our faith responds to the theology and life questions in the movie."
No clips or photos from the movie will be shown, and she will not be wearing any pink as she will be robed to celebrate communion.
The minister retired from the Geneva church in 2021 after serving as an associate pastor and communications director.
She was ordained a Methodist provisional member in 2012 and full elder in 2014. During her ministry, she served at Manhattan, Burlington and Geneva, Ill., churches.
Movie theaters in North Aurora and Oswego are among local sites screening the film.
