Miss Northern suburbs competition Jan. 15

The third annual Miss Northern Suburbs Competition will be held Jan. 15 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mettawa/Lake Forest.

Twelve contestants from throughout the northern Illinois area to compete for the titles of Miss Northern Suburbs 2011, Miss Northern Suburbs Outstanding Teen 2011 and Miss Northern Suburbs Outstanding Pre-Teen 2011.

The pageant begins at 3 p.m. at the hotel, 26225 N. Riverwoods Blvd.

“We are very pleased with the number of intelligent, ambitious and talented young women who have entered the competition,” said Kristen Hadap, co-executive director of the Miss Northern Suburbs Organization. “With the number of outstanding contestants, it will be a challenging task for the judges to choose the next Miss Northern Suburbs.”

Contestants will compete in five phases of competition, including private interview, talent, evening wear, onstage interview and lifestyle and fitness. Each contestant will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and our society at large.

The winner of the competition will be awarded $5,250 in scholarship funds for her college or graduate school education. She will also receive a prize package with gifts donated by local businesses. Another $4,000 will be awarded to runners-up.

During her year of service, Miss Northern Suburbs will travel across the Lake and McHenry county area, speaking to government officials, business leaders, community groups and citizens about her platform issue and encouraging them to become involved in her cause. She will be eligible to compete for the Miss Illinois title in Marion in June.

Robin Ruchti, co-executive director of the Miss Northern Suburbs Organization, said Miss Northern Suburbs will serve as a role model for young women and as an ambassador for the Miss America Organization, and she will also urge girls and young women to develop their leadership skills and to take an active role in their communities.

Established in 2008, the Miss Northern Suburbs Scholarship Organization provides opportunities for young women to achieve their personal and professional ambitions. Contestants also participate in community service activities and develop leadership skills that help them excel in their chosen career and life goals.

A not-for-profit affiliate of the Miss America Organization, the Miss Northern Suburbs Scholarship Organization has made available more than $18,450 in scholarships and in-kind funds to six young women throughout northern Illinois area including Lake and McHenry counties.
