White Sox, D'backs won't play charity game
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox won't play a charity baseball game in Tucson this March and instead plan to give Pima County $50,000 to make up for the lost proceeds.
White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said in a letter to Pima County officials that this year's contractually obligated game can't be held because of scheduling conflicts with both teams. The county Board of Supervisors is scheduled to decide whether to accept the payment at its regular meeting Tuesday.
The Diamondbacks and White Sox once shared Tucson Electric Park as their home stadium and the teams had consolidated their separate obligations into one game against each other. Last year, the White Sox left Tucson for spring training in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale but they still traveled to Tucson to play the charity game.
The 2010 spring training is the final season the Diamondbacks will be based at TEP before the team moves to a new complex near Scottsdale with Tucson's other spring team, the Colorado Rockies.
