Naperville teen dies from crash injuries
A young Naperville man died in a Florida hospital Saturday night from injuries sustained during an accident in which the car he was riding in ended up in a Florida river near the Kennedy Space Center.
Venkat Ragidi Sai, 17, was riding in the back seat of a 2010 Nissan Sentra driven by his older sister Gunna Reddy, 25, about 5 p.m. Thursday when, "for unknown reasons," the car ran off the road and into the median. Reddy then "overcorrected," running off the road and into the Indian River, according to Florida State Highway Patrol officials.
Reddy and a second sister who was riding in the passenger seat, Mounika Ragidi, 19, were able to get out of the upside-down vehicle. Highway patrol officials said the vehicle was submerged in about 6 feet of water, and Sai was trapped underwater for several minutes before Kennedy Space Center employees were able to get him out of the back seat.
Sai was unconscious when he was brought to shore and was airlifted to Holmes Regional's trauma center, where he died two days later.
The two older sisters, who were able to swim to shore on their own after the crash, were treated at a hospital and released.
The stretch of road the siblings were driving on is a causeway between an Orlando suburb and the Kennedy Space Center.
