Alcohol not a factor in crash that hurt 13-year-old Lake Zurich girl
A 13-year-old Lake Zurich girl remained hospitalized with serious injuries Friday after police said she was hit by a van while crossing Route 12 with a 12-year-old friend at 6:20 p.m. Dec. 31.
According to police, the two girls were leaving a shopping center and walking across Route 12 at Pheasant Ridge Road when one of them dropped a cell phone. The 13-year-old bent down to pick up the phone when she was struck by a 2006 Dodge Van heading north on Route 12.
The driver of the van, a 60-year-old Barrington man, was fully cooperative with police. As of Friday, no citations had been issued and police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
The girl was taken by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville and later transferred to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Her condition was unavailable Friday but police say her injuries are serious.
The accident is still under investigation, and Lake County's Major Crash Assistance Team has been called in to assist.
There is a traffic signal and cross walk at the intersection. Details were not available Friday.
Route 12 was closed for three hours while the accident was investigated.
