Chicago jail guard gets 2 years for smuggling
A former federal jail guard who worked in downtown Chicago has been sentenced to two years in prison for smuggling food and cigarettes.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that 51-year-old Tony Henderson of Portage, Ind., was sentenced Monday. He was a jail guard at the Metropolitan Correctional Center for 16 years. Authorities say he smuggled the goods into the federal jail. They say in return he received cash bribes of between $5,000 and $10,000 from inmates’ relatives.
Henderson’s attorney, John Legutki, said Henderson was an Army and National Guard veteran. He says that will make him a target in prison.
Judge Edmond Chang said Henderson committed “a very serious breach of the public trust in a highly sensitive situation.”
Henderson also was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine.
