Man charged in Wis. with 2 bear-hunting violations

MILWAUKEE — Federal prosecutors in Milwaukee have charged a man with a pair of bear-hunting violations.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says John J. Kellogg was the guide on a 2009 hunt in which a bear was killed and illegally tagged. The criminal complaint says he then helped transfer the bear meat to an undercover officer in another state.

A second charge stems from a 2011 hunt. Even though Kellogg’s hunting privileges had been revoked, prosecutors say he shot and killed a bear. Authorities say he then made arrangements to have the meat processed and a bear rug made.

A message left with Kellogg’s attorney late Wednesday was not immediately returned.

The criminal complaint doesn’t list Kellogg’s age or hometown.

A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 19.
