The Larkin baseball team came from behind to win Game 1 then got a lead and held it in Game 2 Saturday to sweep a nonconference doubleheader from Hoffman Estates.
Larkin 11, Hoffman Estates 7: The Royals (5-2) found themselves down 7-0 after 2½ innings but fought back to put a 5-spot up in the third inning and 3 more in each of the fifth and sixth innings to earn the victory. Drew Shore (3 RBI, 2 runs), Miguel Villafane (2 RBI, triple, 2 runs), and Austin Royse each recorded 2 hits for the Royals while Kyle Newquist went 1-for-3 with 2 stolen bases. Rene Bolivar (1-0) picked up the victory on the mound as he threw 2 innings while allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks.
Larkin 8, Hoffman Estates 6: The Royals (5-2) jumped ahead early in Game 2 and held off a late charge by the Hawks to earn their second victory of the day. Drew Shore turned in a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate with an RBI and a run scored while Kyle Newquist went 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run. Jack Eckholm also led the Royals at the plate going 2-for-3 with an RBI, double, and a stolen base. Shore (1-0) earned the victory on the mound as he went 4 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Cody Wahl threw the final 3 innings to earn the save.
Dundee-Crown 9, Elk Grove 8: The Chargers (3-4) used a 3-run, go ahead home run by Scott Nowicke in bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and earn a victory over visiting Elk Grove. Nowicke led the Chargers offensively with a 2-for-4, 4 RBI effort from the plate. Steve Schwartz (RBI, double) and Mike Hazelhurst also recorded multihit games going 2-for-3. Jordan Kalous (1-0) earned the victory on the mound throwing 3 innings, surrendering 1 hit and 2 unearned runs while striking out 3.
Westminster Christian 4, Pleasant Plains 0: The Warriors (2-4) strung together 10 hits while allowing just 1 hit against them to earn a 4-0 shutout victory over Pleasant Plains. Ryan Perez (2-for-3, RBI, double), Dylan Scully (2-for-3, RBI, double), and Frank Oliver (2-for-3, RBI) led the Warriors offensively while Kevin Elder hit a home run. Elder also earned the victory on the mound as he threw 6 innings of 1-hit ball with 11 strikeouts and just 2 walks.
Palatine 4, Bartlett 3: The Hawks were unable to hold on to their 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning as Palatine pushed 2 runs across and held on for the win. Joe Miceli recorded 2 hits and an RBI for the Hawks while Dan Gallanis hit a triple to lead Bartlett’s offense. Gallanis (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound as he threw 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3.
Bartlett 8, Maine West 7: The Hawks (3-3) almost let Maine West back in the game as they carried a 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Bartlett held on to earn the victory. Brett Barger (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season as he threw 6 innings of 4-hit ball while giving up just 1 walk and striking out 2. Ryan Yore recorded a multihit game as he went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 stolen bases while Dan Gallanis knocked in 3 runs.
Streamwood 2, Rolling Meadows 0: The Sabres (5-0) continued their strong start to the season as they defeated Rolling Meadows at home. Brandon Guilfoyle and Nate Pearson (double) recorded an RBI each to account for the Sabres’ 2 runs while Patrick Manning turned in a multihit game going 2-for-2 at the plate. Dalton Lundeen (2-0) went the distance in a hard-fought pitching duel as he scattered 8 hits and walked 1 while striking out 7 in the complete game effort.
Crystal Lake South 7, Deerfield 5: The Gators (4-1) started off slow as they did not score any runs in the first two innings, but came back to earn the victory at home over Deerfield. Max Meitzler (run) and Jeremy DeJesus (2 runs, RBI) led the Gators with 2 hits a piece while Will Ahsmann added an RBI. Brandon Seiser (2-0) earned the victory for the Gators while Zack Geib (1) secured the save.
Batavia 4, Jacobs 0: The Golden Eagles (1-2) were unable to get on the scoreboard as they fell to Batavia on the road. Connor Conzelman recorded a hit and a walk for the Golden Eagles who managed just 4 hits on the day. Greg Mixon (0-1) pitched well, but suffered a tough loss as he threw 4 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5.
College baseball
Judson splits with Mid-Continent University: The Eagles (22-9) fell in the opener 5-3 before coming back to earn a 7-3 victory in Game 2 as they split the four-game series with Mid-Continent University. Tyler Ware suffered the loss in Game 1 as he turned in a complete-game, 6 strikeout performance. Brian Brauer went 4-for-4 while Billie Wright went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI. In Game 2, Wright once again led the Eagles offensively, going 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Josh Raymond also recorded 2 hits and 2 RBI. Gary Capolino and Nick Norris added 1 RBI a piece. Jeremy Winnan won his first game of the year going 5 innings while giving up just 2 hits and no runs.
