Algonquin encourages use of rain barrels, composters

The village of Algonquin’s ECO Committee has joined efforts with The Land Conservancy of McHenry County to promote and sell rain barrels and tumbling composters.

TLC is handling orders at conservemc.org/RainbarrelsNEW.htm and the village is doing publicity and serving as a pickup location.

Rain barrels will benefit Algonquin’s water conservation program by offering residents an alternative water source for watering landscaping and, thus, reducing the use of potable water.

Rain barrels are placed under a downspout to collect and store rainwater. Water from the rain barrel can then be used to water flowers and gardens during dry weather.

The use of rain water is beneficial for the plants, decreases the amount of drinking water used for landscape irrigation and reduces the amount of water runoff during storms.

Tumbling composters will help reduce the amount of garbage sent to a landfill. Fruit scraps, vegetable scraps and yard waste can be put in the tumbling composter. Composting food scraps and yard waste is a natural process that produces organic compost great for use in the garden.

To buy a rain barrel or composter, visit conservemc.org/RainbarrelsNEW.htm. Different sizes, colors and prices are available. Orders must be placed by May 2. When placing an order, be sure to check the box for Algonquin pickup. Orders can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, May 13, and 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Algonquin village hall, 2200 Harnish Drive, Algonquin.
