Flash flood warning in effect

A flash flood warning is in effect for portions of Cook, Kane, McHenry and Lake Counties while Cook and Lake Counties also remain under a severe thunderstorm watch.

The flash flood warning will be in effect until 9 p.m.

As much as 3 inches of rain has already fallen in portions of Kane County, according to the National Weather Service.

A severe thunderstorm watch will remain in effect until 1 a.m. for Cook and Lake Counties.

Metrologists are reporting flooded roadways throughout Kane and McHenry Counties and hail across Cook, Kane and McHenry Counties.

Forecasters are advising residents in areas under the warning to move into an interior room in the lowest floor of their homes as the storm is expected to produce heavy rain and potentially deadly lightning.

Quarter-size hail has already been reported in Elgin and Lake in the Hills as the storm is moving northeast at 20 mph, according to meteorologists.

Large hail has been reported in McHenry County with 1.5-inch, car-damaging hail falling in Crystal Lake.

One-inch-diameter hail has been reported in Elgin.
