Lake, Cook counties took brunt of storm

It's time to dig out.

Officials from the National Weather Service canceled the winter storm warning at about 4 a.m. this morning, but not before Mother Nature threw out 13 inches of snow at O'Hare and 14 inches of snow in Antioch.

Travel times on expressways were slower than normal, but not nearly as slow as the commute Tuesday morning when the storm began Tuesday morning.

Spin-outs and minor accidents were reported throughout the area, but so far, no major accidents have been reported, according to officials from the Illinois State Police.

There is still an advisory, though, as wind is causing blowing snow across already plowed roadways. In addition, wet pavement is causing some black ice conditions throughout the area, which is adding to the amount of accidents in the area.

Meteorologists said snow predictions were pretty much as expected.

The brunt of the storm hit northern Cook and Lake counties, as O'Hare recorded 12.6-inches of snow Tuesday night, and Antioch picked up a reported 14-inches. The snow in Lake County ended at about 4 a.m.

Midway Airport logged 8.8 inches by midnight, meteorologists said.

Officials from the Chicago Aviation Department said there are no delays currently, but airlines at both airports continue to proactively cancel flights as yesterday's winter storm now moves east and affects airports in that part of the country.

At O'Hare, airlines have canceled more than 300 flights due to the weather moving to the east coast, while Midway has canceled more than 150 flights. Southwest Airlines will resume its schedule at approximately 10:30 a.m. today.

Travelers are advised to check their airline's web site before they leave for the airport to confirm the status of their flight.

More than 600 flights were canceled at O'Hare and Midway Tuesday, officials said.

Despite the weather advisory being canceled, there are still numerous school closings throughout the Chicago area. People should check school web sites prior to heading out this a.m.
