Nowak likely to join Miller in McHenry Co. Board Dist. 1

Newcomer Robert Nowak appears headed for victory in his bid to unseat an incumbent and claim one of two a Republican nominations for a seat representing McHenry County Board District 1.

Nowak, a Cary resident and the village's onetime planning, building and zoning director, will join incumbent Anna May Miller on the November ballot if unofficial results hold up.

Those totals, with all 35 precincts reporting, show Nowak ahead 2,093 votes. Miller is next with 1,990 votes, and board member Yvonne Barnes trails with 1,799 votes. Officials were still counting some ballots.

The nominees do not currently face opposition in the November general election, but Democrats still have time to caucus candidates.

Barnes, a former Cary village trustee, was elected to the board in 2006. She currently chairs the board's Law and Justice Committee.

Miller, a Cary resident as well, chairs the board's Transportation Committee. During her campaign she said transportation is the central issue in the district.

Barnes cited quality of life issues among her ongoing priorities and is a strong proponent of the county's groundwater protection efforts.
