Former McHenry board member gets GOP nod

Former McHenry County Board Vice President John Jung will get a shot at reclaiming the District 5 seat he lost in 2008.

Jung, along with incumbent Tina Hill, earned a spot on the November ballot by emerging from Tuesday's Republican primary with a sizable lead over board critic David Frederick.

According to unofficial totals, Jung had 2,270 votes, Hill had 2,195 and Frederick had 1,618.

Jung said he felt better than he did after the 2008 race, when the presence of then-candidate Barack Obama's name on the ballot contributed to the defeat of many Republican candidates who would have otherwise been safe.

"It was a Republican primary," Jung said. "It wasn't a general election with Obama on the ballot."

Hill said she would like to work with Jung again. Both will compete against Democratic incumbent Jim Kennedy for a 2-year term in the November election.

"Jim is OK, but I would prefer to have my colleague back on the same side of the issues," Hill said.

Both Hill and Jung pledged to focus on groundwater conservation, open space preservation and the 2030 land use plan if they are elected.
