Epstein wins, defeats Flannigan in appellate court race

With 94 percent of precincts reporting, Cook County Circuit Court Judge James R. Epstein appears to have defeated fellow candidates Ellen L. Flannigan, Arnette R. Hubbard, Kathleen G. Kennedy and Jim Ryan to win the Democratic primary for the Illinois Appellate Court's first district.

Epstein, 56, who is a former Cook County assistant public defender from Wilmette, had 27 percent of the vote, compared to 23 percent for Kennedy in second place, 22 percent for Ryan, 18 percent for Hubbard and 10 percent for Flannigan.
