Teen charged in Elgin drive-by shooting

Police have arrested an Elgin teenager in connection with a Friday morning drive-by shooting on the city's east side that authorities confirm was gang related.

On Saturday, Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said the 16-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated discharge of a weapon for firing four bullets at a Nissan Altima occupied by five people. The car was heading northbound on Shales Parkway near Chaparral Circle when the shooting occurred.

Police say the teenager was a passenger in a car that pulled up to the Nissan. The teen then starting shooting, hitting the Nissan four times, authorities said. Two of the bullets penetrated the windshield.

Nobody was injured.

The teenager was arrested Friday night. Police haven't yet recovered the gun, Swoboda said.

The teen, who was being held at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center, is due to appear in juvenile court Tuesday in Cook County.

No other information was released on Saturday.
