Naperville Central's Melby earns MVP nod

Gabi Melby of Naperville Central is this week's Daily Herald MVP for girls basketball.

Gabi Melby, Naperville Central: The junior guard averaged 24.3 points a game over three games, including a personal-best 32 points in a victory against Minooka. Melby hit 25 field goals, including 13 3-pointers, and was 10 of 14 at the free-throw line. She also totaled 12 assists, 11 rebounds and 6 steals.

Avery King, Stevenson: Since starting 2020 by scoring her 1,000th career point, the four-year varsity player has kept on scoring. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater commit had a career-high 26 points (three 3-pointers), as the Patriots captured a 66-43 decision over Waukegan for their third win in a row. Earlier in the week, she had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 blocks in a 42-40 win over Carmel.

Emily Klaczek, Fremd: With first place on the line, the two-time Mid-Suburban West Player of the Year helped lead Fremd to a 60-47 win over Barrington. The senior guard scored a game-high 21 points along with 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals as Fremd took over sole possession of first place with its 17th straight conference win.

Mandy Mien, Streamwood: This senior point guard and the school's all-time assists leader guided the Sabres to a 3-0 week starting with 20 points, 8 steals and 6 assists against Fenton. Mien followed with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in a 54-34 win over West Chicago and capped her week hitting the winning free throw with six seconds left in overtime against Metea Valley, finishing with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals.
