Elgin street reopened after gas leak repaired

Elgin police closed Congdon Avenue between Preston Avenue and Iroquois Drive Sunday as they worked with the fire department to deal with a natural gas leak.

The leak in the 1100 block of Hiawatha Drive appears to have been caused by a minor car crash Sunday morning in which one vehicle hit a house and its gas meter, officials said.

Residents in nearby houses on Hiawatha and Congdon were notified and asked to evacuate.

Elgin Police Sgt. Dan O’Shea said no one was injured.

“You always have to be careful with anything to do with gas or electric, so we err on the side of caution,” O’Shea said.

Nicor Gas responded and stopped the leak, O’Shea said. Congdon Avenue reopened after the crash scene was cleared.
