‘End of an era’: Des Plaines city manager to retire

Longtime Des Plaines City Manager Michael Bartholomew plans to retire, the city announced Tuesday.

Bartholomew has led the city staff since 2012, spearheading ongoing efforts to revitalize the downtown and the renovation and reopening of the historic Des Plaines Theatre, among other tasks.

“Mike's financial stewardship, working alongside the city council and the director of finance, has substantially reduced the city's debt, leaving Des Plaines in a strong fiscal position,” the city’s announcement states. “His retirement marks the end of an era, and the city looks ahead to building upon the foundation he has laid for future success.”

Bartholomew has worked in municipal government for more than 43 years, serving in multiple roles for Sterling Heights, Michigan, before joining Des Plaines in 2010 as the city's director of community and economic development. He was appointed manager by the city council two years later.

“I’m grateful for the 13 years of service Mike has spent working on behalf of the city” Mayor Andrew Goczkowski said. “Our city has grown and progressed so much over the last decade, and we are well positioned to continue that success in the years ahead thanks in part to Mike’s leadership.”

A departure date hasn’t been set. Bartholomew will assist in the search for his successor.

“While I am approaching retirement, my commitment to Des Plaines is unwavering,” he said. “My job is not done; I am dedicated to assisting the city council in navigating the transition to the next phase of leadership, ensuring a seamless continuation of the city's progress."
