Man charged in Elgin murder
A Wisconsin man has been charged with murdering a man in Elgin after stealing cellphones from him in October.
Dijon P. Edwards, 25, of Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is accused of killing Dontrell Cortez on Oct. 20.
Edwards is charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, according to a news release from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.
The state’s attorney says Edwards shot Cortez once with a handgun.
The shooting happened around 6:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Fleetwood Drive, according to a news release in October from the Kane County coroner. The coroner also said he was known as Dontrell Williams.
Cortez lived in Bloomington, according to the state’s attorney.
A detention hearing is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 19.
