Winter arrives - and isn’t leaving soon

The first major snowstorm of 2024 struck the suburbs Tuesday and will likely continue to snarl traffic and clog driveways and sidewalks into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

David King, a weather service meteorologist, said Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs will continue to see intermittent snow throughout the week and into Saturday morning. King said a dynamic system arrived in the Chicago area Monday night and began presenting dangerous accumulations on roadways into Tuesday evening.

He said the snowfall is predicted to stop this morning, with temperatures reaching the upper 20s and low 30s during the day. But light accumulations may resume tonight, adding half an inch to an inch of snow before tapering off Thursday morning. Then, he said, another system will come in very late Thursday night and leave Saturday morning, featuring “some impactful snowfall, some very strong wind gusts and can make for some pretty dangerous travel conditions.”

He said it’s too early to accurately predict the specific volume of snow to expect, but he emphasized that wind gusts and potentially blowing snow will affect both commutes on Friday morning and evening.

After that, he added, we must prepare for some bitterly cold conditions. Starting Sunday, King said, high temperatures will be in the single digits for the better part of next week, with wind chills plunging to minus 10 to minus 20 degrees.
