Help keep Palatine fire hydrants clear of snow

The Palatine Fire Department is asking for the community’s help to keep fire hydrants accessible this winter.

Heavy snowfall makes finding and accessing hydrants difficult for firefighters, and during an emergency every second counts, officials say. With that in mind, the department is asking residents, business owners, and local civic groups to consider participating in the new, "Adopt-A-Hydrant" program.

When clearing a hydrant, snow should be removed about 3 feet away in all directions, with a pathway cleared between the hydrant and the roadway. Participants should exercise caution when shoveling, not stand in the street and be careful not to slip and fall into the roadway.
