United Arab Emirates announces fighter jet 'loss' in Yemen

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - The United Arab Emirates says one of its warplanes taking part in the Saudi-led war in Yemen is missing.

The Emirates' military made the announcement in a single-sentence statement on the state-run WAM news agency on Monday.

The statement described the event as the "loss of a fighter aircraft."

Officials in the seven-emirate federation could not be immediately reached for comment.

Last year, a Saudi-led coalition began a campaign of airstrikes targeting Shiite rebels known as Houthis who had earlier taken the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

The war in the Arab world's poorest nation has killed more than 6,000 people and created what the United Nations warns is a "humanitarian catastrophe," with some 7.6 million people "severely food insecure" and 3.4 million children out of school.
