Indiana woman ordered held after leading Oak Brook police on chase
An Indiana woman accused of leading police on a high-speed chase after a theft Saturday in Oak Brook was ordered held in jail by a DuPage County judge on Sunday.
Tikeisha Na’keyta Coleman, 29, of Decatur, Indiana, is charged with one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding stemming from the chase that authorities said reach 81 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Authorities say the chase ended when Coleman rear-ended a pickup truck on 17th Street in Maywood.
Also charged is Daevondre Powell, 25, of the 3600 block of West Polk Street in Chicago. He was ordered released while awaiting trial on charges of burglary and retail theft.
The charges stem from the theft Saturday of more than $350 in merchandise from the Oak Brook Nike store, county prosecutors said.
Authorities said Oak Brook police officers called to the store at 12:30 p.m. Saturday learned that a person identified as Powell took three pairs of Air Jordan shoes valued at $389 without paying.
Powell left the store and got into a car driven by Coleman, which headed eastbound on 22nd Street., authorities say. A chase ensued.
“What I find particularly disturbing in this case is the allegation that Ms. Coleman attempted to flee the scene at a high rate of speed at one of the busiest intersections in the County in the middle of a Saturday afternoon while the roads were slick with snow,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “Thankfully, no innocent motorists or pedestrians were injured or killed.“
The next court appearance for both defendants is scheduled for Jan. 29.
