Focus on candidates regardless of party
I read with great interest and appreciation the editorial "The soul of our democracy," which appeared in the Opinion section of last Tuesday's Daily Herald. It really gets to the heart of the problems we are facing with our current political environment.
Both the Senate and the House have accomplished next to nothing while they attack one another and/or posture for the coming re-election campaigns.
And, how is it that neither of the leading candidates for president should even be considered? We voters have to ask ourselves if we are carefully reviewing and considering those who will work with others for the betterment of America.
It seems we are too prone to blind allegiance to a political party without regard to the facts and choices we make.
We allow ourselves to be swayed by the deluge of misinformation, deception, and outright lies produced by many media sources. We need to take more than a passing interest in the candidates that seek to represent us and elect those, regardless of party affiliation, who will best serve our country.
As so eloquently described in the editorial noted above, "If we continue to elect candidates who take pride in their refusal to work with their colleagues, if we satisfy ourselves with sorting into tribes whose individual goals override those of the people as a whole, we can expect more of the erratic, volitile and unproductive government with which we have become all too familiar".
