Elect president by popular vote
Elect president
by popular vote
My proposal is to eliminate the Electoral College, as the method used to determine the president of our country. Following are four reasons I believe this change in the electoral process for president is necessary:
First, the Electoral College has handed victory to the loser of the popular vote twice in the past two decades and came close to doing the same in 2020.
Second, candidates are encouraged to concentrate their efforts in a few states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, Florida and Georgia that are not representative of the country at large.
Third, “It is alarming that a candidate (Trump) came close to winning while receiving 5 million fewer votes than his opponent (Biden) nationwide.” (Washington Post, Nov. 15, 2020).
Fourth, small states already have disproportionate power in our government because of the equal representation they have in the Senate regardless of the number of people they represent. Lesser populated states like Wyoming and Alaska have equal representation in the Senate, the same as California, Illinois or New York.
Conclusion: The Electoral College should be abolished in favor of electing our president by majority vote, ensuring equal representation for all American citizens.
