Dundee-Crown flies past Jacobs in second half
Whatever Dundee-Crown girls basketball coach Sarah Miller said to her team at halftime, she should bottle it.
Holding a tenuous 17-14 lead against District 300 rival Jacobs at halftime, D-C blitzed the stunned Golden Eagles 31-13 during the final 16 minutes in posting a 48-27 win in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action in Algonquin Tuesday night.
"I think we were a little stagnant in the first half offensively and to Jacobs' credit they had us on our heels," said Miller. "They played with a little more intensity. We came out in the second half with more intensity and got the loose balls and made plays. I thought our defensive effort the whole game was very good."
The Chargers (15-14, 4-6), who finished third in the Valley Division and have won four straight, set the tone in the second half during the first 3 minutes. The Chargers made their first 3 shots of the third quarter and scored 7 unanswered points to lead 24-14 with 5 minutes left in the quarter.
Jesania Laboy scored 5 points including a conventional 3-point play and Melissa Barker canned an 18 footer from the right corner and the Chargers never looked back.
Outscoring Jacobs (10-16, 3-7) 19-4 in the quarter, D-C led 36-18 after 24 minutes. Laboy, connecting on 4-of-5 from the floor in the quarter and scored 10 points in the period to lead the Chargers.
D-C was 7-of-12 from the field in the third for 58 percent.
The Chargers continued the pressure in the fourth quarter and held their biggest lead of the game at 27, 46-19, with 2:33 left on a layup from Kayla Lawrence.
Laboy paced the Chargers with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
"We were not moving much on offense in the first half," said Laboy. "Coach told us we needed to play with more focus in the second half. It was a good team effort. The girls did a great job of getting me the ball in good position to score."
Lawrence added 9 points and Creighton Fed 8 for the winners.
Jacobs, which committed 20 turnovers, only managed 10 baskets in 42 attempts for 24 percent.
Jen Barnec led Jacobs with 9 while Carly Sidor scored 8.
"D-C came with great energy at both ends," said Jacobs coach Joe Benoit. "Their defensive pressure took us out of a lot things we wanted to do. "
