Lightning strike ignites fire in Elgin

A building on the 700 block of Tollgate Road in Elgin was damaged by fire due to a lightning strike, authorities said.

Elgin firefighters were called to a possible fire at a business at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, and saw smoke coming from the northwest corner of the roof of the building.

Witnesses told firefighters they saw a flash of lightning and shortly after smelled smoke in the building. Employees exited the building and pulled the fire alarm, authorities said.

There were no injuries in the blaze, authorities said.

The fire was extinguished in about 20 minutes.

The damage was estimated to be about $10,000 to the roof and the front door of the facility, which had to be forced open to get inside, authorities said.

Firefighters West Dundee and Carpentersville assisted Elgin with the fire.
