Evangel University dismisses head football coach

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Evangel University has dismissed head football coach Brenton Illum after six seasons at the school.

The university said Tuesday that quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Chuck Hepola would serve as interim head coach during the search for Illum's replacement. In a news release, Director of Athletics Dennis McDonald asked for prayers during the "time of transition."

The Springfield News-Leader (http://sgfnow.co/1ShLkc2) reports that Illum had a 27-36 overall record in his six seasons, and 21-30 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Illum also served as the interim director of athletics in 2014-15.

The Evangel alum said in a post to his Facebook page that he had "given everything" to try to build the program and would miss the players and coaches "with all my heart."
