PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) - Argentina midfielder Diego Valeri scored off a late free kick after setting up an earlier goal for his team mate Fanendo Adi to secure a 2-1 win for the Portland Timbers over Toronto FC in MLS on Sunday.
Valeri buried a 74th minute free kick into the top right corner of the net to give the defending champions just their third win of the season.
Valeri combined with Darren Mattocks to set up Adi for Portland's opening goal in the 17th minute, which the Nigerian striker tapped in from close-range.
Former Timbers player Will Johnson equalized for Toronto in the 40th minute but the visitors were unable to respond again after Valeri's second half strike.
Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos and American winger Brad Davis both scored spectacular first-half goals as 10-man Los Angeles drew 1-1 with Sporting Kansas City.
Davis gave Kansas the lead on the half hour when he curled the ball into the side netting but Dos Santos equalized in the 42nd minute when he broke free on the counterattack and chipped over the head of goalkeeper Tim Melia.
LA played the last 20 minutes a man down after former England international Ashley Cole was sent off after being booked twice in less than a minute, first for time wasting then the second for a clumsy tackle.
