Tennessee prep Hall of Fame coach Henry Bowles dies at 80

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A Chattanooga funeral home says longtime Howard High School basketball coach Henry Bowles has died. He was 80.

A notice posted on the website of John P. Franklin Funeral Home says Bowles died Sunday.

Bowles coached boys basketball for 29 seasons at his alma mater and 39 overall. He compiled a 616-260 coaching record and took his teams to the state tournament 16 times, finishing runner-up twice. He stepped down in 1998.

Bowles was inducted into the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2003.

Franklin Funeral Home is handling arrangements, which are incomplete. A cause of death wasn't listed. The Chattanooga Times-Free Press (http://bit.ly/2lzKOwq ) reports Bowles' death followed a lengthy illness.
