INDOT: Latest segment of I-69 extension ready for 70 mph

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - State highway officials say the 21-mile section of Interstate 69 between Bloomington and Martinsville is finally ready for top highway speeds.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says motorists can expect 70 mph speed limits along much of the newest section of the I-69 extension beginning Monday.

Crews spent the weekend removing barrels and uncovering speed limit signs along the corridor.

INDOT says there's a 55 mph speed limit for nearly 8 miles through Bloomington before the northbound speed limit increases to 70 mph for more than 13 miles. INDOT says northbound motorists should be prepared to reduce speeds when approaching Martinsville.

The section will have intermittent lane restrictions through November.

INDOT missed its Aug. 31 target for completing the extension's Section 5 after taking control of the project last year.
