1 dead in plane crash near Marion Municipal Airport

MARION, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say one person has died in a small plane crash in northeastern Indiana.

Marion Fire Chief Geoff Williams confirmed the fatality in the crash Thursday afternoon near the Marion Municipal Airport south of the city.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said the agency was investigating along with the National Transportation Safety Board. The NTSB said the plane was a Piper PA-30.

It's the second fatal plane crash at or near the airport this year. Two Madison County firefighters died April 2 when their plane hit another at the airport. An early report from the Federal Aviation Authorities indicated one was landing while another was taking off, and the pilots did not see each other.
