Third-division Alessandria reaches Italian Cup semifinals
LA SPEZIA, Italy (AP) - Substitute Riccardo Bocalon scored two late goals as third-division Alessandria came from behind to beat second-division Spezia 2-1 Monday in an unlikely Italian Cup quarterfinal.
It's the first time a third-division club has reached the last four since Bari in 1984.
Alessandria's opponent in the two-legged semifinals will be AC Milan.
Bocalon equalized in the 83rd from close range then met a long cross with a header that bounced in for the winner a minute into stoppage time.
Emanuele Calaio had converted a penalty for Spezia eight minutes in after teammate Nahuel Valentini's shirt was torn in half by a defender.
Alessandria eliminated Serie A clubs Palermo and Genoa in the previous two rounds. Spezia also had an impressive run, ousting Roma on penalties in the Round of 16.
