Mayor Rahm Emanuel picks replacement for Chicago alderman

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has chosen a replacement for an alderman who stepped down earlier this year.

Emanuel's office said Monday that 30-year Chicago resident Sophia King will be the new alderman for the city's 4th Ward. According to Emanuel's office, 18 candidates were reviewed by a selection committee, and three finalists had met with Emanuel.

The mayor's office said a confirmation vote by the City Council will take place Wednesday.

According to the mayor's office, King is founder and president of Harriet's Daughters, a nonprofit group of professional women that works to create, support and advocate for policies and processes that secure job and wealth creation opportunities for African-American communities.

Will Burns resigned as alderman earlier this year, accepting a job with online lodging service Airbnb.
