Speed limits to be lowered on streets near Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - City officials have decided to lower speeds on several major Muncie streets that pass through the Ball State University campus.

The Muncie Board of Public Works and Safety agreed Wednesday to a university official's request to lower speed limits to 20 mph from 30 mph on streets like McKinley Avenue and University Avenue. The request must win final approval from the Muncie City Council after a 90-day trial period.

The (Muncie) Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1KdFJvV ) reports that the request came from Ball State's associate vice president for facilities planning and management. City street superintendent Duke Campbell passed along university official Jim Lowe's request to the board of works.

Officials approved a proposal to lower the speed limit on a stretch of Oakwood Avenue in early December.
