First lady gives national medal to Chicago History Museum

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago History Museum has been recognized by first lady Michelle Obama with the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service.

The museum was among 10 institutions honored Wednesday at the White House by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The first lady presented the medal to directors and community members from each institution. Community members shared how the museum or library made a difference in their lives.

Chicago History Museum President Gary T. Johnson and community member Joyce Chiu accepted the award from the first lady.

Later this year, StoryCorps - a national nonprofit dedicated to recording, preserving, and sharing the stories of Americans - plans to visit the winning institutions to document stories from the community.
