Suspect in wounding of Indianapolis police officer charged

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) - Indianapolis police have apprehended a suspect in the shooting of a police officer earlier this month.

Michael Swafford was arrested at a gas station by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Violent Crimes and Gang Unit late Saturday. The 31-year-old Swafford was charged with attempted murder for his alleged role in the shooting of Officer Christopher Maher.

Maher was injured early on March 8 when he tried to make a routine traffic stop, but the motorist tried to evade Maher. In the ensuing chase, a passenger in the car shot at Maher and his left hand was injured, probably by flying glass.

Police allege when Swafford was arrested, he also was carrying a .50-caliber handgun and narcotics. He faces additional charges as a result.
