Former deputy coroner gets 6 years for dealing drugs

LA PORTE, Ind. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a former deputy coroner in northwestern Indiana to six years in prison for illegally selling a narcotic painkiller.

LaPorte Circuit Judge Thomas Alevizos sentenced Dawn Maxson on Tuesday after she pleaded guilty in January to two counts of dealing a controlled substance.

The former LaPorte County deputy coroner was arrested Oct. 29 after selling 70 hydromorphone pills for $500 in La Porte. Authorities alleged that she legally obtained the drugs through prescriptions written by a physician and then sold some of them. She originally was charged with 15 counts of dealing.

The LaPorte County Herald-Argus reports the judge told Maxson that with good behavior and success in an anti-drug program, she'll be able to apply for a sentence modification and possibly be placed on probation.
