Arlington Heights apartment fire under investigation

A Saturday morning fire in Arlington Heights has left some without a home for the holidays.

Firefighters were called to 1117 S. Old Wilke Road for a fire inside a condominium building. Flames and smoke were visible from a fourth floor unit when emergency crews arrived on the scene around 9:42 a.m.

A police officer, in the area at the time of the fire, helped evacuate residents from the building, but could not enter the unit where the fire appeared to have started. The resident of that unit was not home at the time of the fire, officials said.

The fire was contained to a fourth floor corner unit and extinguished by 10:17 a.m. Rolling Meadows, Mount Prospect, Palatine and Schaumburg fire departments provided assistance in extinguishing the blaze. Old Wilke Road was closed to traffic as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

None of the residents were injured in the fire, but the police officer was treated by paramedics on the scene for smoke exposure.

The Arlington Heights Police Department estimated four to six units suffered fire, smoke and water damage and were deemed uninhabitable. It was unclear where those residents were staying as of 4 p.m. Saturday.

Any displaced residents will be assisted by the village’s health and human services department or the American Red Cross, according to a news release.
