Police: Man found shot to death in vehicle in Oak Brook

Oak Brook police are investigating the murder of a Chicago man found shot to death inside a car on the village's west side.

Police responded to the intersection of 22nd Street and Camden Court at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday for a report of gunfire. Investigators recovered 21 shell casings from the area of the shooting, Police Chief Brian Strockis said.

"No one is in custody at this time, but our detectives are currently working multiple leads and processing physical evidence," Strockis said Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe at least one person exited another vehicle and fired shots into a Chevy passenger car. Strockis said, "It was a targeted incident."

Officers found the man had sustained "multiple gunshot wounds," and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The DuPage County coroner's office identified the man as 27-year-old Don Ameen Jones.

He was in a passenger seat, and the Chevy's driver was not hit in the shooting, Strockis said. She is cooperating with police, Strockis said.

"Luckily, the female driver was not injured or struck at all," he said.

Police earlier said the shooting appears to be an "isolated occurrence" with no ongoing threat to the public.

The last homicide in the village was in 2011, Strockis said, adding that Oak Brook is generally a safe community.

"I want to commend and thank the Oak Brook Police and Fire Departments and their partner agencies for their diligent response and investigation into this tragic incident. We have zero tolerance for crime of any sort in Oak Brook, and our detectives will work tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice," Village President Laurence Herman said in a statement. "As this was a targeted incident, I can confidently say that there is no threat whatsoever to the public and Oak Brook remains one of the safest communities in which to live, shop, dine and work."

The forensic unit of the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team, a countywide task force, processed the car and the shooting scene. Roadways were shut down for five hours.
