Illinois officer kills pet dog that attacked police dog

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Springfield woman whose dog was fatally shot by an officer when it tussled with a police dog says she's angry police haven't apologized for the shooting.

Chrystal Musgrove also says the five gunshot wounds her boxer-pit bull mix Harley suffered were excessive.

She tells The State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/2m0ij8Y ) Harley's death was especially hard on her 9-year-old son. She says Harley was just doing his job as a guard dog.

He got out of his cage and jumped a fence Monday. Harley attacked and injured a police dog as officers were searching for two suspects in a store robbery.

Deputy Chief Dennis Arnold of the Springfield Police Department says in an email that an officer shot Harley because he deemed it "necessary to protect the well-being of his canine partner."
