Shanghai SIPG eliminated from Asian Champions League

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Shanghai SIPG, coached by Sven-Goran Eriksson, was eliminated from the Asian Champions League on Tuesday after losing to Jeonbuk Motors 5-0 in the second leg of the quarterfinals.

The first leg ended 0-0.

Leonardo put Jeonbuk ahead in the 52nd minute, and an own-goal from Shi Ke made it 2-0. Leonardo added another from the penalty spot and former Premier League striker Lee Dong-gook then scored two late goals.

Shanghai finished with 10 men following the second-half dismissal of Lu Wenjun.

"We played well in the first half against a strong team and I was proud of the players," Eriksson said. "This is the first time that Shanghai has been in the Champions League and I am satisfied with the progress we have made though I am not satisfied with tonight's result."

Eriksson's position at Shanghai, a club he joined in 2014, has been under pressure. Shanghai finished second in 2015 and currently sits in fourth place in the Chinese Super League, 14 points behind leader Guangzhou Evergrande with six games remaining.

Jeonbuk coach Choi Kang-hee said he was delighted at how his defenders kept Shanghai striker Hulk quiet.

"Hulk is a dangerous attacker but you can't play football on your own," Choi said. "We kept our concentration and worked hard and ensured that Hulk did not have a big part to play in the game."

Jeonbuk will play either FC Seoul or another Chinese team, Shandong Luneng, in the semifinals.

In another quarterfinal match, Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates advanced by defeating Uzbek club Lokomotiv Tashkent 1-0.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Brazilian midfielder Caio Lucas Fernandes scored the lone goal for the 2003 champions.

Al Ain will face either national rival Al Nasr or Qatari club El Jaish in the semifinals.
