South Shore commuter rail to offer rush-hour quiet cars

CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) - The South Shore Line commuter rail plans to begin offering quiet cars during rush hours.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Board of Trustees approved the pilot program that's scheduled to begin on July 1.

The (Munster) Times reports (http://bit.ly/1TSFxpu ) passengers in quiet cars will be asked to refrain from phone conversations, to silence their phones and other electronic devices, to keep conversations brief and in whispers, and to keep headphone volume low.

The last car of morning and evening rush-hour trains will be designated as a quiet car. The quiet car designation will be in force between Chicago and Michigan City and will rely on the compliance of riders.
