Forged check in Des Plaines leads to arrest seven years later

More than seven years after a woman tried to cash an altered check at a Des Plaines bank, an arrest has been made, police announced Thursday.

Chikyta Williams, 29, of the 1000 block of West 87th Street in Chicago, is charged with felony forgery.

According to a police news release, Williams tried to cash a $2,442.55 check at what was then a Fifth Third Bank at 1300 E. Oakton St. using a new account. While verifying the validity of the check, bank employees determined it had been altered and originally was for $86.36.

Williams left the bank before police arrived, the release stated.

After an investigation that included a review of surveillance photos, an arrest warrant was issued for Williams. On Monday, police in Chicago called Des Plaines police to say they had Williams in custody.

Williams was turned over to Des Plaines police. She subsequently appeared in Cook County court for a detention hearing.
