Cook County President Preckwinkle names new chief of staff

CHICAGO (AP) - Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle has named the longtime former head of the Illinois Department of Revenue to serve as her chief of staff.

Preckwinkle announced Monday that Brian Hamer will take over the post effective Wednesday.

Hamer led Illinois' Revenue Department from 2003 to 2015. He also has served as chief assistant corporation counsel in the city of Chicago's law department, where he headed the tax division.

Preckwinkle says Hamer brings management experience, a "thorough understanding of finance" and "passion for public service" to the job.

In a statement, Hamer says he's pleased to "have the opportunity to contribute to the continuing transformation of Cook County government."

Hamer lives in Chicago.
